SGUnited Skills Programme

Background

The SGUnited Skills (SGUS) programme is an integral part of the SGUnited Jobs and Skills Package (SGU JS) which was launched in May 2020 to create 100,000 opportunities for local workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.  SGUS is a full-time training programme that offered certifiable courses delivered by Continuing Education and Training (CET) Centres, including Institutes of Higher Learning.

These courses were developed in collaboration with industry partners and provided trainees with practical opportunities to apply their newly acquired skills at workplace immersions and industry projects.  To facilitate employability, the SGUS courses are designed in a modular format, allowing trainees to transition to active employment when job opportunities arise.

Trainees also received a training allowance of $1,200 per month during the programme to cover basic subsistence expenses, and they could utilise their SkillsFuture Credit to offset the course fees.

In collaboration with Universal Stage and Eurasia Global Food, SMU Academy offered the Advanced Diploma in Growing and Transforming Enterprises with a niche track in Holistic Value Chain Management in F&B.  This specialised programme ran from October 2020 to December 2021, with a total of three intakes.

The Challenge

Universal Stage maintained a close working relationship with Eurasia Global Food and have witnessed its F&B restaurant business expand from one outlet to five outlets (as of Aug 2020), even during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic.  As manpower is fundamental to the F&B operation, the expansion placed considerable pressure on the recruitment and training of employees.

Recognising the need for a comprehensive solution, Eurasia Global Food approached Universal Stage to develop in-house customised training materials with the aim of

1.    Facilitating the smooth adaptation of new employees to the F&B environment so as to reduce the potential turnover;

2.    Equipping existing employees with the understanding and knowledge on the holistic value chain advantages that the company has to gain a competitive edge in the market.

The perfect alignment of objectives and requirements from both Eurasia Global Food and SGUS programme led to the introduction of the Advanced Diploma in Growing and Transforming Enterprises with a niche track in Holistic Value Chain Management in F&B.  Developed in collaboration with Singapore Management University (SMU) Academy, Universal Stage and Eurasia Global Food, the Holistic Value Chain Management in F&B that comprised a total of 11 chapters was launched.

The Advanced Diploma in Growing and Transforming Enterprises with the niche track of Holistic Value Chain Management in F&B empowered participants with a holistic view of the dynamic and interrelated areas driving enterprise growth, with a specialised emphasis on the entire value chain management in F&B, spanning procurement to restaurant operations.

To ensure interested candidates fully understood the requirements of the SGUS programme, a briefing session was organised.  Candidates were also required to submit their enrolment applications to SMU Academy and there was a screening interview thereafter to determine their acceptance.  Successful participants who enrolled in the SGUS programme were required to complete the following components over a six-month period:

1.    The Advanced Diploma in Growing and Transforming Enterprise

  • Four modules from the Adv Certificate in Growing Enterprises

  • Five modules from the Adv Certificate in Transforming Enterprises

2.    The Holistic Value Chain Management in F&B

3.    Attachment to Company

The attachment to the company across the various departments further enhanced the participants’ learning experiences by providing practical exposure aligned with the niche track's content where learners gained valuable insights into the restaurant operations, food processing factory, logistics and B2B sales operations.
